Meeting Description:

Third workshop on the issue of Experimental Methods in Language Acquisition Research (EMLAR III). Lectures and hands-on sessions on practical aspects of language acquisition research.

Utrecht Institute of Linguistics OTS will hold its third workshop on the issue of Experimental Methods in Language Acquisition Research (EMLAR III). This workshop, which is part of the Netherlands Graduate School of Lingustics (LOT) graduate programme, aims to provide PhD and MA students with the opportunity to learn more about the different methods used in the field of (first and second) language acquisition research. The programme will consist of a series of lectures (each on a different method), and several more hands-on sessions on more practical aspects of language acquisition research. Each session addresses issues such as: subject selection, rationale behind a given method, practicalities involved in the actual execution of the experiment, advantages and disadvantages of a given method and do's and don't's.

The full program of EMLAR III (7th-9th November 2006, Utrecht University) and details about registration can be found at: http://www.let.uu.nl/~Frans.Adriaans/personal/emlar06.html

Critical periods for L2 acquisition: new evidence and new questions
Antonella Sorace
University of Edinburgh

Despite recent advances in research on adult second language (L2) acquisition, much remains unknown about the actual limits of L2 development. Unlike children acquiring their native language, L2 learners vary considerably in their end-state – the linguistic abilities at which they ¡Èplateau¡É - and most do not achieve an endstate that is comparable to that of native speakers.  These facts seem to lend support to the well-known idea that there is a critical period for language acquisition, such that non-native languages cannot be successfully acquired in adulthood. However, there are people who start acquiring a second language in late adolescence and adulthood and become virtually indistinguishable from native speakers. Do these very able learners attain the same type of mental representations of grammatical knowledge that monolingual speakers attain? Do they apply the same processing strategies in using their knowledge? Very advanced ¡Ænear-native¡Ç speakers are the ideal testing ground for theories that assume a critical period.  The picture that is beginning to emerge is one in which some aspects of grammar are fully acquired, whereas others exhibit indeterminacy even at the near-native level. Where can one draw the dividing line between what is acquirable and what is not? Do adult L2 learners lack grammatical knowledge or the ability to use their knowledge efficiently? I will address some of these questions on the basis of recent research on the nature of L2 ultimate attainment.

Mafest2006: Language Learning Fest

 Åê¹Æ¼Ô¡§Akira Omaki  Åê¹ÆÆü¡§2006ǯ 3·î14Æü(²Ð)07»þ43ʬ21ÉÃ
Every year the Linguistics Department of the University of Maryland organizes a state-of-the-art linguistics workshop. This year's Mayfest is a Language Learning Fest, a 2-day workshop (May 12th and 13th) devoted to research on the role of input and how it is processed by children in first language acquisition. Its two principal aims are (i) to bring together language acquisition researchers representing theoretical, experimental and computational approaches, and (ii) to promote discussions and interactions among researches with different perspectives so as to further our understanding of the field.

The program consists of presentations by invited speakers, representing contrasting theoretical and methodological perspectives (e.g., experimental, statistical, cue-based, computational modeling) in the field of phonological and syntactic development. Following the presentations, there will be two discussion sessions (phonology and syntax), in which our faculty members, Bill Idsardi and Jeff Lidz, will summarize and comment on the presentations to facilitate the discussions between the audience and the presenters.

Invited speakers:
Elan Dresher, University of Toronto
Carla Hudson Kam, University of California, Berkeley
Mark Johnson, Brown University
Jessica Maye, Northwestern University
Toben Mintz, University of Southern California
William Sakas, CUNY/Hunter College
Daniel Swingley, University of Pennsylvania
Charles Yang, Yale University

Discussants:
Bill Idsardi, University of Maryland
Jeff Lidz, University of Maryland

The registration and attendance are free of charge. More details on the workshop (including directions, schedule, and accommodation information) are available at our website:

  Meeting Description:

The Second Language Research Forum (SLRF) is a prestigious and internationally renowned conference which brings together researchers in second language acquisition (SLA) from all over the world. It is the premier conference on SLA in North America providing a venue for established scholars and graduate students to present work on a wide variety of theoretical and empirical issues in SLA including cognitive, linguistic and sociolinguistic SLA research conducted in both laboratory and classroom settings.

The theme of the conference is "In Search of the 'Zen' of Second Language Acquisition: Examining the Learner at the Crossroads of Language, Culture and Identity." With our theme, we seek to gain clarity around the experiences of SLA with a focus on various sociocultural facets of language learners. We are seeking proposals that reflect the converging approaches and methods that different disciplines bring to the study of language, culture, and identity.
