The English Language Education Society of Japan (JELES)
Annual Conference at Waseda University
The English Language Education Society of Japan (JELES) is pleased to announce that Dr. Terry Royce will give the Special Invited Lecture at its annual conference to be held on March 31st at Waseda University. Dr. Royce's Lecture is entitled "Multimodal Texts for Reading Development". The following is the abstract of his lecture;
Title: Multimodal Texts for Reading Development
This presentation applies the principles of M.A.K. Halliday's social semiotic, general theory of communication to multimodal text - text where communication involves more than one mode. Instances of these may involve texts that combine written and visual modes (the most common), spoken and visual, or even combinations of spoken, visual, written and movement modes. These metafunctional principles can be applied to various textbooks with a focus on the development of reading skills in the language classroom context (where images are often used in textbooks, movies, diagrams etc), and so will be primarily focused on page-based multimodal texts. This presentation will be useful for those who want to utilize the co-presence of the visual and linguistic modes in their educational contexts. For illustrative purposes the presenter will introduce and analyse some examples of typical textbooks used in Japanese middle/high school classrooms, as well as non-educationally focused multimodal texts which are sometimes used in intermediate to advanced classrooms (such as advertisements or extracts from newspapers or magazines).
Preliminary information about other presenters can be found in the schedule below. Presentation titles and abstracts will be later known.
